 FOUNDER PETER CURTIS

PMC Group I, LLC

From the beginning of my career, I observed numerous near misses in mission-critical environments, events where safety, reliability, and operational discipline made the difference between success and failure.

Those experiences ultimately led to the founding of PMC Group I and the development of our SmartSOLUTIONS™ platform, which captures decades of operational insight and transforms it into practical tools for the next generation of infrastructure professionals.

Group 137

My motivation has always been simple: keep the systems that power society running safely and reliably.

The data center industry is scaling faster than its workforce, its governance models, and its operational visibility. We're building AI campuses at a pace the world has never seen — but the people running them still rely on spreadsheets, tribal knowledge, and hope. That gap is what PMC was built to close.

Personal Milestone

Procedures

The life-critical importance of reliability

Clear procedures can be life-critical

Another defining experience occurred when I was responsible for helping care for my brother who relied on a respirator. This experience reinforced the life-critical importance of clear procedures, monitoring, and reliability, principles that later influenced the development of Methods of Procedure (MOPs) and operational playbooks used in mission-critical environments.
Insight

When lives depend on reliability, procedures are not optional.

Industry Insight

Knowledge Gaps

Near misses revealed what was missing

Failures often begin with knowledge gaps

Throughout my career working with critical infrastructure, I saw firsthand how operational failures often stemmed from knowledge gaps, inconsistent procedures, and lack of real-time operational insight. These observations ultimately led to the creation of PMC Group and SmartSOLUTIONS™, designed to capture operational knowledge and reduce risk.
Insight

Capturing operational knowledge is essential to reducing risk.

Industry Events

30+ Years

How real-world failures shaped the mission

Industry Events That Reinforced the Mission

Our technology and methodologies were not developed in a vacuum. They were forged on the front lines of the mission-critical industry over three decades. From global blackouts to personal tragedies, every tool we build and every procedure we write is a direct response to a real-world failure.
At PMC Group I, we don't just observe the industry's challenges — we engineer the solutions. Here is how the most pivotal events in modern infrastructure history shaped our mission.
Resiliency

Y2K / 9/11 / 2003

Surmounting global grid and security threats

Surmounting Global Grid & Security Threats

A series of global crises at the turn of the century exposed the inherent fragility of both digital and physical infrastructure, challenging long-held assumptions about system reliability and preparedness.
From technological uncertainty to large-scale security threats and grid failures, these events reshaped how resiliency is defined — driving a shift toward continuous operation models, robust disaster recovery strategies, and infrastructure designed to perform under the most extreme conditions.
Event
Catalyst
The convergence of Y2K uncertainty, the security shock of 9/11, and the systemic failure revealed by the 2003 Northeast Blackout.
Action
These foundational crisis exposed the extreme fragility of our digital and physical infrastructure. They cemented our core philosophy: facilities must be designed for continuous 24/7 operation under the most adverse conditions. These events drove our early focus on rigorous business resiliency, disaster recovery planning, and the comprehensive critical infrastructure frameworks that now define our consulting and engineering operations.
Core Philosophy

Facilities must be designed for continuous 24/7 operation under adverse conditions.

Safety

Human Element

The personal cost of safety

The Personal Cost of Safety

Those experiences ultimately led to the founding of PMC Group I and the development of our SmartSOLUTIONS™ platform, which captures decades of operational insight and transforms it into practical tools for the next generation of infrastructure professionals.

Milestone
Catalyst
A tragic workplace accident where a close friend and colleague was electrocuted, suffering burns over 60% of his body.
Action
This devastating event proved that engineering without strict human safety protocols is a failure. It became the deeply personal motivation for authoring the comprehensive safety sections — including strict Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), NFPA 70E Arc Flash mitigation, and proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standards — in the textbook, Maintaining Mission Critical Systems in a 24/7 Environment. Today, these life-saving protocols are fully digitized and automated within the SmartWALK® platform.
SmartSOLUTIONS™

Execution Gap

From Visibility to Execution

The Birth of SmartSOLUTIONS™

For decades, legacy systems have provided visibility into what equipment is doing — but they stop short of guiding human action. SmartSOLUTIONS™ was created to close that critical gap, transforming passive data into real-time, actionable intelligence that ensures operators respond with precision, consistency, and confidence.
At the heart of this innovation is the recognition that the greatest risk is not system design, but human execution. SmartSOLUTIONS™ does not replace the engineer — it empowers them, bridging the gap between engineering intent and operational reality while systematically reducing the human error responsible for the majority of industry downtime.
Event
Catalyst
A major Banking and Finance client suffered a catastrophic Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) failure. The system was bypassed to raw utility power for two full weeks. Despite technicians performing manual rounds every single shift, the vulnerability went entirely unnoticed.
Action
This alarming reality was the direct impetus for building SmartSOLUTIONS™. It proved that traditional, paper-based rounds give a false sense of security. We created SmartWALK® to digitize rounds and readings, establish real-time thresholds, and enforce true "situational awareness" so that critical system drifts are caught instantly, eliminating the human execution gap.
Engineering Integrity

Vulnerability

Infrastructure compromise must be designed against

Infrastructure Vulnerability & Compromise

A series of high-profile incidents exposed just how vulnerable our power and critical infrastructure systems can be when cost-cutting and incomplete engineering decisions collide with real-world stress.
These events underscored the need for rigorous short-circuit coordination analysis, Digital Twin stress-testing, and designs that never trade away core engineering integrity.
Event
Catalyst
The Fukushima nuclear accident, the Silicon Valley Transformer Attack, and the recent Spain Power Outage.
Action
Fukushima demonstrated the catastrophic consequences of "value engineering" crucial scope out of a project. The Silicon Valley attack and the Spain outage highlighted the physical vulnerabilities of our power grids. In response, we integrated rigorous short-circuit coordination analysis (now AI-assisted via our SKM SCCAF framework) and Digital Twin stress-testing into our platforms. We ensure that cost-cutting never compromises the core engineering required to survive localized or catastrophic failures.
Pandemic

COVID-19

Adapting to global disruptions

Managing Through the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic placed unprecedented strain on mission-critical operations, forcing organizations to maintain continuous uptime while navigating workforce disruptions, restricted site access, and rapidly evolving safety protocols.
This global event exposed the importance of operational resilience, remote visibility, and adaptable procedures — accelerating the adoption of remote command capabilities, cross-trained teams, and infrastructure strategies designed to sustain performance under extreme uncertainty.
Event
Catalyst
A global health crisis that disrupted workforce availability, restricted site access, and challenged the continuity of mission-critical operations worldwide.
Action
The pandemic fundamentally changed how mission-critical facilities are staffed and operated. We rapidly developed and published actionable protocols for "Managing Through Pandemics" (featured in Chapter 18 of our book). We addressed HVAC purification systems, cross-training to mitigate sudden staff shortages, and leveraged our SmartVUE™ remote command center technology so operators could maintain full operational visibility even with skeleton crews on-site.
Future

AI Era

Powering the intelligence revolution

AI, Hyperscale, and the Future of Energy

Artificial Intelligence is by far the biggest opportunity to solve the world's most pressing issues — but it demands unprecedented electrical loads.
Event
Catalyst
Artificial Intelligence is by far the biggest opportunity to solve the world's most pressing issues — but it demands unprecedented electrical loads.
Action
To meet the massive baseload requirements of AI, we recognize that Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and highly efficient Hyperscale Data Centers must be the foundation of our future until other viable energies mature. We are actively shaping this future in our upcoming 4th Edition book. Furthermore, we evolved our platform by launching PCAI™ (Mission Critical AI Copilot), creating the ultimate AI-driven operational intelligence layer to help engineers seamlessly manage the complex power and cooling realities of the next generation.

As we scale to meet the massive demands of AI and hyperscale data centers, the complexity of our infrastructure is rapidly outpacing traditional human management. The future will not be won by those with the best hardware, but by those who can digitize tacit knowledge into real-time operational intelligence.

FOUNDING

PMC Group was founded to help organizations reduce operational risk, improve knowledge transfer, improve safety/reliability, and support the infrastructure that keeps society running. Our work spans data centers, energy systems, healthcare, and other mission-critical facilities.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM & ORGANIC TALENT SCALING

A Lasting Industry Legacy: Over PMC's nearly three-decade history, the company has maintained one of the mission-critical industry's most distinctive organic talent pipelines — a structured internship program that has introduced hundreds of emerging engineers and technologists to the theory and practice of mission-critical infrastructure operations. This program is both a workforce development contribution to the industry and a highly cost-effective, self-reinforcing mechanism for scaling PMC's own team and client delivery capabilities.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

PMC's internship program draws from an intentionally diverse talent pool — spanning Ivy League universities, state engineering programs, community colleges, and international trade schools across NA, LATAM, EMEA, and MENA. This breadth reflects PMC's belief that mission-critical expertise is not the exclusive domain of elite institutions, and that the industry's greatest talent gap will be filled by practitioners trained hands-on, in real operational environments, under the mentorship of experienced engineers.

World map graphic with color-coded regions and red location markers highlighting North America, South America, Europe, and the Middle East to represent PMC’s global presence.

Interns work directly within PMC's consulting and technology teams — participating in live commissioning programs, Method of Procedure (MOP)and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) development, SmartWALK® field deployments, SmartTEAM™ content development, and Agentic AI platform testing. They leave with both technical skills and an understanding of how PMC's integrated platform ecosystem connects knowledge transfer, operational technology, and enterprise AI.

VISION FOR THE INDUSTRY

The future of mission-critical infrastructure will require:

MOTIVATION

MY MOTIVATION IS SIMPLE:

checkmark.seal.fill 1

PRESERVING WHAT EXPERTS KNOW BEFORE IT'S GONE

The mission-critical industry is losing decades of hard-won expertise as its most experienced engineers retire. I'm driven to capture, codify, and transfer that knowledge so it lives on in systems, not just in people's heads.

checkmark.seal.fill 1

SOLVING THE HUMAN SIDE OF DOWNTIME

65% of mission critical downtime traces back to human error — not equipment failure. Everything I build is aimed at giving the people on the floor the right information, the right training, and the right tools to prevent the mistakes that take facilities offline.

checkmark.seal.fill 1

MAKING EXISTING TECHNOLOGY WORK THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED

I didn't set out to replace anyone's controls,  BMS, or CMMS. I set out to close the operational gap that none of them were designed to address — where procedures, situational awareness, and human execution determine whether a facility runs or fails.

checkmark.seal.fill 1

TURNING FIELD EXPERTISE INTO SCALABLE TECHNOLOGY

After spending decades inside trading floors, data centers, and defense facilities, I've spent the last 20+ years turning that operational knowledge into patented, repeatable technology that delivers consistent results regardless of who's on shift.

checkmark.seal.fill 1

PROTECTING THE INFRASTRUCTURE THE WORLD DEPENDS ON

Data centers keep hospitals running, financial markets trading, and entire economies functioning. The people who operate these facilities deserve better tools, better training, and better technology — and building that is what gets me out of bed every morning.
