Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Method of Procedure (MOPs), Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), and documented lessons learned become significantly more valuable when AI helps engineers quickly locate, understand, and apply them.
Technology, however, cannot create operational judgment. AI can organize knowledge, but it cannot replace the experience required to validate procedures, adapt to changing conditions, or make critical decisions during real-world events. This same philosophy extends to workforce development.
Peter envisions digital twins, immersive simulations, and AI-assisted learning becoming powerful tools for preparing future engineers. Instead of relying exclusively on classroom instruction or observation, new professionals will be able to practice complex operational scenarios in realistic virtual environments before working on live infrastructure.
These technologies can accelerate learning, improve consistency, and create safer opportunities to build experience. Their greatest value, however, comes when they are combined with mentorship and the transfer of knowledge from seasoned professionals.
